Think hard, what side of the age-old argument do you fall on – does a tree that falls in the woods when no one is around make a noise or not? Your answer to this question might seem unimportant but it might just define you.
Let’s try a different example. If you watched the ‘Breaking Bad‘ series finale but didn’t tweet, instagram, post, snapchapt, vine or pin to prove it – did you actually watch it? Well…
Any cynic can argue that anyone that happens upon the fallen tree has proof the that tree fell but that doesn’t help you with proving that you saw the epic, ‘you-so-had-to-watch-it’ end to one of television’s greatest complex anti-heroes.
Let’s go one step further and say that on Sunday, September 29th at 9:45 p.m. you, ahem, boldly predicted how the series would end and you have the digital footprint to prove it. You win! Except what if no one retweeted, replied or even favorited your tweet. What then?
The ultimate goal of expressing some calculated version of yourself on social media is connection. You want need your opinions and thoughts to have proven value that engages and challenges the outside world. Your voice, as you know, offers a unique and often hilarious perspective that offers benefit to all who are lucky enough to come across it. Truth?
Everyone, everyone, wants to feel heard. Again, EVERYONE! Self-importance is tied to it. For the first time in history social media exists to give a growing number platforms with which to express said voice so. From your iPhone 5s while stuck in traffic to the comfort of your grungy basement, the outlet exists to proudly, and safely, shout with you ever-growing digital megaphone.
So whether a tree falls in Portsmouth or Heisenberg does in Albuquerque, live free or die knowing that you have the power to let the world know. Go forth and shout to the top of your lungs but you’ve been warned, not everybody cares…
